Where does ALT EGO usually gather songwriting inspiration? What is your usual songwriting process, specifically for your new album?
The process differs from song to song. We generally enjoy a not-too-stressed-out environment in studio (I think that says enough). We then work out some cool chord progressions and beats. We’re generally inspired by dirty and sexy beats. We then draw inspiration from classical compositions and come up with the melodies/synths/structure and all the extras.
Why do you make music?
We love seeing people’s reactions to the music we make. It’s an unexpected reaction of surprise and pleasure. We love making people happy!
You guys changed into your alter ego for your new self-titled album – from acoustic to electric. Why this decision?
When we started Acoustic Element there was a lot of doubt as to whether we could pull it off as an acoustic act. We’re really happy with our accomplishments, and although we’re far from done, ALT EGO is us taking the acoustic vibes to the big stage, and the dance floor. That’s our next challenge!
Which artists influenced you when you were growing up? Do they still influence your music today?
90’s music was something we enjoyed dancing to, Backstreet Boys, NSYNC, Britney Spears, Michael Jackson etc. (Like normal people). But, we also had a strong classical influence. Throughout our schooling and growing up we played in orchestras, choirs and bands. We now listen to more electronic dance music, we’re actually heading to Ultra Europe soon to see some of our favorite DJ’s live.
What or who played a big role in the person you’ve become, both personally and in your career?
A combination of fashion & finance (Callen) and media & marketing (Jody) kinda explains who we are and where we come from.
What are the biggest obstacles for bands at the moment? Have you experienced any yourself and how did you overcome it?
Maintaining a brand identity, establishing mutually beneficial relationships with clients and managing personal finances. Nah! We’re pro’s ;) haha
On a serious note, we’ve been in the game for a long time and we’ve got systems in place to ensure we run the business smoothly to best suit our lifestyle needs.
What can fans look forward to from your debut album out on 1 June?
I would say the central theme of the album is “fusion”. We really focussed on blending and creating interesting sounds by fusing different genres together. There is a mix of dance, house, hip hip, gypsy and classical influences.
