We got to briefly chat to DJ Half ‘n Half before his performance at this month’s Park Acoustics. Let him tell you how to not “be a shitty human”.
If you were ever going to have a soda float what flavour would the ice cream half be and what flavour would the soda half be?
I’m going with a classic cream soda float. #nostalgia
If you could manage any band ever, who would that be and why?
I would be remiss to not mention Incubus, my favourite band of all time. But I would say someone fun like Chance the Rapper or Childish Gambino could be rad, cause they just seem like fun guys to be around. Or if I really want to give my heart some strain, I would take on Julian Casablancas and The Strokes boys.
What’s your favourite type of band merchandise?
T-Shirts and the local merch stuff is so 2016. Sawagi (my favourite Japanese homies) had boxers with a condom pouch made up. Nothing tops that.
Why is saxophone so damn sexy?
Have you heard a saxophone lately? Pure baby making music. I mean look at this guy
Does your underwear match your clothes?
Generally. I try keep it aesthetically even. I’m a minimalist at heart.
What would you say are the must-have items for anyone interested in producing high-quality music? And what would you say are the bare necessities for those who are budget conscious?
A mentor, access to good speakers and software, a keen ear for music.
For those getting into it and who are budget conscious. Access to youtube tutorials, a DIY/ punks way of working, a keen ear for music.
Other than music-related stuff, what do you want to get out of 2017?
I’m working on starting smaller start ups and have plans to go overseas with some bands. Also planning a wedding at the end of the year so that’s taking up some of my brainpower/ budget for the year.
We feel that a personal motivating factor, albeit a superficial one, is that we want to create music to leave a legacy. To be able to materialize something in this life that lastingly affects people. Would you say legacy is a motivating factor for you?
Completely agree. Leaving a lasting impact on the South African music scene is something I aspire to. I know I won’t be an Adelle/ Beyonce/Jay Z figure as we are a little removed from the mainstream market to make that kind of a cultural impact. If I can create an environment when artists and musicians can become self sustaining and move beyond their small town club shows then I’m building something bigger than myself and that’s what counts. At the end of the day all I want is for people to do good things and be good to their fellow humans. Selfishness and self centered egos always fall. It’s the company you keep that really defines who you are and the change you make in the world. So remember those who helped you get to where you are and honour those relationships. Don’t only use people when it suits you. Basically don’t be a shitty human.
