We chatted to FOKOF Lager ahead of Capital Craft Beer Festival 2018. Check out what they had to say.
Hey guys, from music to the beverage industry. How did you make that step?
We had a limited edition of 4 beers released through a friend of ours’ brewery (Sir Thomas Brewery) in 2014 as what would’ve been a once off merchandise extension. The demand was so overwhelming that we decided it would be a shame if didn’t pursue it properly. We got introduced to the good people at Devil’s Peak Brewery and we created FOKOF Lager – we figured the name worked well for our music and lager is a national sport in South Africa, so it could only be a lot of fun. That’s the short version.
How many years have you been part of the Capital Craft Beer Festival?
This would be our 3rd year. It’s our favourite calendar event and we have been friends with the organisers for many years now.
What’s the funniest thing you have ever done or heard said at a beer festival?
I can’t think of any specific quotes now but we have had a guy tackle and break our inflatable beer bottle once and Sonja (our brand manager) almost punched his teeth out. Another time a guy managed to almost cut his finger off when he wanted to break a plastic cup in order keep the FOKOF sticker that was on it. There was a lot of blood but at least Sonja was there bandage him up. Sonja is a very dynamic person.
How do you feel Capital Craft has impacted Pretoria?
I think they are doing God’s work.
What could be better than getting people from all across the spectrum together for some drinks, laughter and music?
We feel very confident that the people who brew our beer are the best and they don’t fuck around when doing their job, this allows us to fuck around and be creative with our product and brand. We love what we do and we’re very excited for new projects, parties and collaborations in the future.
