We’re interviewing a few of the acts performing at Grietfest 2014 this year. Next up in the series is Hawkword, an incredible mixed genre duo. We’ve previously done a DYD #SuperInterview with them. You can check it out here.
DYD: Tell us about your act and how you began. We want to hear about your sparking source of inspiration to do music and your motivating drive to do it well.
Hawkword: We met in 2010, became besties and 3 years later we tried to make music and ended up making bacon and French toast instead. We listen to a lot of different genres of music but generally inspired by Jazz music, the smoother things in life, cigarettes and coffee, don’t forget the coffee.
DYD: What do you think of Johannesburg’s music scene? We’d like to expand this question and ask how you think Johannesburg fits in South Africa’s music scene as a whole.
Hawkword: Johannesburg is taking over! They have a huge Drum and Bass scene; a growing ‘Beats’ scene, House and erriythang! Watch out Cape Town!
DYD: Do you have a favourite performance? Where was it and why is it a favourite?
Hawkword: Nomadic Orchestra. Every time we’ve seen them play and it’s our favourite because they’re fucking badass. Everyone, at least 19 times in their life, should go witness Nomadic Orchestra.
DYD: What can we expect from your Grietfest 2014 performance?
Hawkword: The majority of our set will comprise of our own tunes. There will be lots of jumping around, lots of hugs and seeing as we’re playing on the Science Frikshun stage, there will also be a little surprise towards the end of our set. Not saying anything but #rhino∆meat.
DYD: Who is your favourite act on the Grietfest 2014 line-up?
Hawkword: Locally, everyone but Sibot & Toyota’s performance is not to be missed! Internationally, Koan Sound, Black Sun Empire and Far Too Loud. This is going to be one hell of a party. We’re overly excited.
