We caught up with Jimmy Nevis recently. We wanted to get the inside scoop on his latest music video, 7764.

DYD: You gave your track, 7764, the same area code as the place where you grew up. Where is 7764 and what does it mean to you?
It’s the code for Athlone, situated in the Southern Suburbs of Cape Town. The song speaks about ownership and being proud of where you from – knowing who you are and not being ashamed to embrace it.

DYD: Can you talk us through any symbolic imagery in the video?
Jimmy: Well the video is shot in Athlone – the video explores the three things that represent my culture – family, food and faith. It’s about different cultures, the foods that represent my hood and the activities and vibe that I grew up with.

DYD: What was it like shooting 7764 with a GoPro?
It was a new experience for me but totally awesome. My favourite part was shooting the drone footage – it really added a spark to the video.

DYD: How are you managing your success? We imagine that it must get pretty hectic in terms of the workload and staying down to earth.
It’s always been part of the plan. I’ve experienced a lot of success, but it’s also come with a lot of setbacks and sacrifices – those experiences keep you grounded. I also have a great support system.

DYD: What are your plans for the rest of the year?
Jimmy: More music. More community work and working with other artists.
