We got to chat to Friso Woudstra ahead of the release.
Radio Kalahari Orkes will be launching their new album, Mamba! on 1 March, and their latest music video for their first single, Bobbejaansvlei, premiered a little while ago on Jukebox. Their new album is their first new, official release in 5 years.
Mamba! is your first album in 5 years! You guys are known for producing music that is a report back as to where you are at the time – what’s behind the music in this new album?
We have a variation of styles on the new album from jazz, country, Hip Hop, traditional and our usual RKO style of songs, so really a bit of everything for everyone.
RKO is joined by writer and poet Jaco van der Merwe of Bittereinder for this new album. What has it been like working with some like Jaco?
Jaco is a great guy and a lyrical genius! He gave us the lyrics with the story behind it and let us have free range of where the songs would eventually end up. It’s great working with him and we hope to do some live collaborations with him this year.
RKO is made up of a diverse array of musicians, each who is well known in their own respective ways. Would you say it’s this blend of diversity that has made RKO as popular and successful as it has been?
Definitely yes. We all come from different musical backgrounds and when we come together as RKO it all seems to gel and fall into sync. You will hear the diverse musical styles on Mamba. Dan Roberts (the producer) gave the band freedom when it came to the styles of the songs.
Complete the sentence. Africa is…
a beautiful, unexplored, colorful, mystical and lovable continent.
We feel that a personal motivating factor, albeit a superficial one, is that we want to create music to leave a legacy. To be able to materialize something in this life that lastingly affects people. Would you say legacy is a motivating factor for you?
We create songs that are there to be played for a long time. Some of the ideas in the new album were created 6/7 years ago so we not here to make an album that only stays alive for a year. We hope it becomes a legacy album that will be around for at least 5 years until we make another one:)
