We speak to Michael Lesar about the past, present and the future.
Did you ever envision that your life would look like this when you were a child?
Not in my wildest dreams could I have ever imagined that it would turn out like this. Looking back now, I can see that nothing was by chance and that music was always on the cards for me. When I was very young, I spent quite a bit of time in my room playing the same five vinyls on my cheap belt driven turntables day dreaming about playing around the world at parties and festivals, backtracked to people screaming my name. The good ol’ days. :)
We regularly follow your musical adventures. Can you tell us about your favourite experience abroad while performing?
Wow, thank you! At the top of my list, playing a back-to-back set with US house sensation, Jourdan Bordes, deep in a jungle in Thailand at the Jungle Experience Songkran Festival to thousand of screaming people. Phew, getting goose bumps just thinking about it, it was a pretty special experience. Second to that, playing in Dubai at the House of Afrika event at the Dek on 8 with Cape Town legend Charl Chaka was pretty damn cool. My Portugal summer tour last year was also a very memorable experience playing all over different parts of Portugal. Lastly, the month I spent as guest resident at Mirai lounge in Bahrain early this year. These moments are all very special and close to my heart.
What are your thoughts on the electro-swing industry and where do you see it going?
I definitely think it’s here to stay and not an overnight trend, there have been way to many new bands and artists out there that have been directly inspired by Electro Swing and its culture. Because of this, I only see it growing from strength-to-strength in South Africa. At the moment it’s massive all over the world with dedicated festivals and events. I definitely see it getting bigger.
What can we expect from your performance at Lets Twist Again?
I’m so excited about this event! We’re throwing everything back to the 1950s on the night. I’m doing a special set featuring 50s; rock and roll, soul, R&B, rockabilly and some boogaloo. Amped!
What is your ultimate musical success? And, what are you doing right now to achieve it?
My ultimate success is not necessarily financially althouugh it wouldn’t be a bad form of success, haha! Just being able to travel whilst doing what I love, which is bringing joy to people through my music and making them dance, that’s enough success for me. I’m currently in studio with my band, Full Swing, working on a very special album. Keep an eye out for it. On the 21st of July I leave to Portugal for 6 weeks for a summer tour as support act for the Brazilian percussion band, Napalma. I’m looking forward to the exciting times ahead!
