Matthew Edwards is an Industrial Designer from Johannesburg, South Africa with a fascination for footwear.
Johannesburg, for me, represents a dynamic space of possibility for design whether in fashion or products. We have an incredibly stylish young streetwear culture.
I graduated from UJ with a BA Honours in Industrial Design in 2016 during which I developed a football boot for African conditions. It was through this that realised the potential for South African footwear design with my design background.
Sketching existing sneakers for me is a way of critically analysing and learning the proportions and details of some of the most celebrated shoes. I found influence in Tinker Hatfield who designed most of the Nike Jordan’s we know and love, I see a lot of myself in his sports background and approach to design thinking. In the future I would like to work for Adidas, Nike or Puma to develop streetwear and football boots.
