I documented the #FeesMustFall protests in Pretoria last week.

Day 1

Day 1 of the protest happened at the University of Pretoria on October 21st. Day 1 protests were peaceful. Protesters marched, danced and sang around campus.

Day 3

There’s a lot of things to be said about Day 3 of the protests, the protest that led more than 18000 students to the Union Buildings. Students got the 0% increase they were looking for but the violence in the protest was not necessary. I have however never felt more proud to be living in the time we are in. Students across the entire country have come together to unite in a cause we feel strongly about. It’s a shame the memory of it will be tarnished by the violent acts of a few. There were individuals stoking the flame of chaos but most of the students were there to peacefully protest. One truly big mistake on government’s side was not announcing Zuma’s address or the results thereof. If they had used the (working) PA system simply to announce the outcome of the meetings, a lot of miscommunication and frustration could have been avoided.
