This series “Proficient” follows the lives of hardworking men and women in the Epe Fish Market in Lagos, Nigeria

Simisola Babalola describes her series: “The word “Proficient” means good at doing something or skilled and experienced in the sense of the photographs.  It portrays the lives of people (sellers) at Oluwo Chief Market. It’s better known as the Epe Fish Market located on the north side of the Lekki Lagoon, Lagos, Nigeria.”

She believes that the term “proficient” expresses the power given to men and women at the market, it also shows how well skilled and hardworking they are towards their occupation.

Simisola continues: “During my brief documentary with random sellers at the market, I felt so inspired by the way these people believe so much in their passion and struggle, I found it sincerely empowering and beautiful. Clive Barker once said “any fool can be happy. It takes a man with real heart to make beauty out of the stuff that makes us weep” there and then I truly understood all what his evocative words meant.”
