Oppikoppi is South Africa’s biggest music festival. There is summer heat, winter cold, thorned African plants, drinking with friends, the naked run, getting to know strangers and incredible music acts. Oppikoppi 2014 is around the corner and this year the festival is celebrating its 20 year birthday. We think that it’s time for an update on your where, when, line-up, cost and what to pack details.
Oppikoppi usually takes place around the Women’s Day public holiday. However, this year we have not been graced with that public holiday but the show must go on (and you must take leave). The festival begins on Thursday, the 7th of August and will carry on until the 9th of August. Eager beavers and people with time are heading through to the festival on Wednesday, the 6th of August.
Oppikoppi happens 14km outside of Northam in Limpopo. We haven’t gotten lost yet because Google Maps knows how to get to Oppikoppi. However, here is a map for the adventurous.
Festivals are considered expensive. Festivals in South Africa are much cheaper than international festivals but they can still get you down. Tickets for Oppikoppi 2014 are R700 from the Plankton ticketing website, click here. You should probably also check out our guide on how to save money at music festivals.
