Oppikoppi is South Africa’s biggest music festival. This year there will be 20 000 festival goers ready to party in the veld. The festival always happens over three days. There is summer heat, winter cold, thorned African plants, drinking with friends, getting to know strangers and incredible music acts. Sometimes I think Drop Your Drink’s URL should have been www.iloveoppi.com because I talk about it so much. We are 43 days away from Oppikoppi and it’s time for an update on the wheres, whats, artists and how much of the event.

Oppikoppi Festival has confirmed 100 acts. Drop Your Drink will be doing one of three activities at the acts in bold: taking photos, dancing in the dust and stumbling around. The acts are:

Festival Dates
Oppikoppi always runs around the same dates, it’s to do with the Women’s Day public holiday. This year the dates are from the 9th of August until the 11th of August. The festival grounds will be open on the 8th of August at 9am for eager beavers.

Pin-point Oppikoppi
The organisers were gracious enough to provide a map to Oppikoppi. We should have listened last year because we followed what the GPS said and it put us on the R511 which is full of potholes so deep that we almost went underground and became mole people. Don’t take the R511, take the R510. Oppikoppi is 14 km outside a little town called Northam and if you’re early enough you can purchase ice from there instead of having it melt in your car during the drive. Another tip is that D.D., Designated Dave, your Designated Driver, must be stone cold sober during the drive. The police are looking for an excuse to ruin your trip because they can’t go.
Cost
You have three options:
– The Standard Bank subsidised price: R600. You don’t need to bank with Standard Bank, you just need to register on their site for the tickets and you get it for a magical R600. Click here.
– The Oppikoppi Facebook Page price: R700. This option is for people who complained about how the Standard Bank system crashed last year and want to have nothing to do with it this year (even though the bugs are sorted out) and they’re going to pay an extra R100. Click here.
– Tickets available through Ticketbreak: R750. The most expensive. I wouldn’t use this option because it takes away R150 of my booze money. Click here.

What to Bring
I’m such a good person, I’ve already written out a festival guide that will help you with what to expect at Oppikoppi and it has a complete packing list. In fact, it’s so good that I’ve been contacted by Bloomsbury Publishers to publish it*. Click here to find the Ultimate Survival Guide to Oppikoppi complete with the best festival packing list in the world.

I also started an Oppikoppi Closet Series for people that want to look good while being prepared for the weather. If you don’t care then please skip this step.
Oppikoppi Closet Series (Part 1), women’s wear
Oppikoppi Closet Series (Part 2), men’s wear

*I may or may not be bull-shitting you there.
